Outdoor entertaining should feel as effortless as a summer breeze, but often I see a few common design missteps that can leave even the best host or hostess falling a bit short of the perfect summer bash. Whether you're hosting a sunset dinner or a casual weekend brunch, these five pitfalls can really cramp your style and your guests' comfort. Here's are the 5 most common mistakes, how to easily avoid them and create an outdoor space that feels as inviting as it is beautiful.

  1. Overlooking Flow & Function

The Mistake: A cluttered layout or awkward furniture placement can leave guests feeling cramped or unsure of where to gather.

The Fix: Think like a host and a designer. Arrange seating in conversational clusters with enough space to move around. Anchor your layout with rugs or planters to create natural zones—dining, lounging, bar, etc.

2. Underestimating the Power of Lighting

The Mistake: Relying solely on harsh overhead lighting - or worse, forgetting it altogether - can drain the warmth from an evening outdoors.

The Fix: Layer lighting like you would indoors. Combine soft string lights, glowing lanterns, and flickering candles for a warm, ambient glow. Opt for warm-toned bulbs and dimmers when possible to create that effortless California mood that lingers long after sunset.

Pro Tip: I love using these rechargeable cordless lights for both my outdoor dining table and self-serve bar.

3. Playing It Too Safe with Matching Sets

The Mistake: A uniform patio set may be easy, but it often lacks soul and sophistication.

The Fix: Collect, don’t coordinate. Mix materials - weathered teak, woven wicker, iron. Blend silhouettes. Toss a navy-striped pillow onto a cream linen chair. Layering adds interest and gives your space a collected, confident feel.

4. Forgetting Shade & Comfort

The Mistake: Leaving guests exposed to harsh sun or in stiff furniture is a recipe for discomfort.

The Fix: Bring in shade with intention - think tailored umbrellas, breezy pergolas, or even draped canvas sails. Focus on comfort with plush cushions in high-performance fabrics, trimmed with contrasting piping or classic preppy stripes for that fresh, coastal polish.

5. Skipping the finishing touches

The Mistake: Overlooking the details - like tableware, greenery, or music! These will most definitely make the space feel like an afterthought and unfinished.

The Fix: Treat your outdoor space as an extension of your interiors. Use melamine pieces that mimic ceramic, tuck hurricanes into corners, and layer in planters and pots for texture. These little extra touches create a sense of ease and elegance that feels distinctly personal.
