3 Steps to a Fresh and Vibrant Spring-Ready Home
While winter in Southern California is certainly not as brutal as it is in most other parts of the country, we have certainly had our share of unpleasant weather this year. The thought of spring—with its warmer temperatures, sunnier skies, and new growth fueled by all the recent rain—is sure making me smile.
With winter in the rearview mirror and the freshness of spring upon us, there is no better time to refresh your home. The idea of “spring cleaning” has been practiced by many cultures for centuries. After being cozy in our homes for winter and the holidays, it is definitely time for a fresh start—and what better way to do that than by preparing your home for spring. A focus on clearing up physical and mental clutter creates time and space for the new season and longer days to be enjoyed.
Here are three steps to give your home a fresh vibrancy for spring:
Step #1: Declutter, Determine What You Love and Donate the Rest
Most of us suffer from some degree of “pack rat” syndrome—we accumulate stuff that ultimately outlives its usefulness but we are loath to let go of it. Spring is the perfect time to take stock of everything you have and decide what you can easily live without.
Making the choice to declutter your home has been shown to have many benefits. At the top of that list is reducing stress—something that’s important for our mental and physical health. Additionally, by decluttering our homes, we free up space, literally and figuratively.
An easy place to start is in your closet. Think about the last time you wore certain pieces of clothing. The “six-month rule” is common—get rid of it if you haven’t worn it in six months—but use what works for you! You may be surprised to learn you don’t miss the clothing you choose to donate at all.
Moving on to your home decor, consider if there are certain pieces you’ve had for far too long and are just tired of looking at. That may signal a change is necessary! Refreshing your space doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming; maybe just adding a few new pieces to complement what you already have is all you need.
Step #2: List All Areas in Need of Attention, Then Clean Each One
Most people do not put cleaning high on their list of things they love to do. But doing a deep clean for spring does not have to be daunting. Breaking up tasks throughout the week into manageable “portions” is key. Start by making a list of areas or rooms that have not been cleaned for some time. My must-do task is washing all the windows inside and out to truly embrace the spring light and air. Next for me is refreshing outdoor spaces, such as patios and decks—perhaps adding some new plants and flowers to celebrate the new season.
By the way, when I say “I do this…”, I usually mean I hire someone to do whatever task I am referring to. I have three kids, two dogs, a husband, and an interior design firm so I don’t have any time to spare. I know what my time is worth and I learned long ago that hiring help (when done right) can be a huge time-saver and get you to your end goal much faster. I just had to be clear that I am not a superhuman!
Step #3: Store Last Season's Decor, Then Style with Spring-Inspired Pieces
“Spring-ifying” your home does not have to be a big production but having more sunlight throughout the day should encourage you to brighten up your space. Maybe replace the darker and moodier decor or blankets you’ve had out for winter with cleaner surfaces and fresh flowers. Another small touch may be replacing your seasonal candles or essential oils with fresh spring scents such as citrus or floral notes.
Embrace Spring!
Like many others, I am ready for warmer weather and sun-filled days. This is reflected throughout my home by creating brighter, more minimal spaces in place of heavy holiday decor. Having a clutter-free home can reduce stress, improve sleep, and give you more time. And with all the clutter gone, we can work on designing and creating the home of your dreams!
