Inspiring Emotion With Color
Are you aware that the color of the walls in your home sets more than an aesthetic tone but a psychological one as well? For that reason, knowing the emotion you want radiating throughout your space can help you choose appropriate paint colors.
Think about how you feel in a room that’s blue or green—colors often used in healthcare settings or spas that reflect the calm that washes over you when you’re enjoying nature. Contrast that with the emotions evoked by red or orange walls, which are often used in restaurants to get people excited.
Since paint color is such an important part of home decor, and so challenging for many people, here are three tips to help you make choices that evoke the feelings you desire.
Creating Cozy, Comfortable, Yet Colorful Rooms
Warm-toned neutrals and earth tones are good options for any space you want to make cozy. Colors in that range are so popular for a reason; they create a backdrop to bring in natural elements and produce a cozy atmosphere. Warm-toned neutrals and earth tones are great for spaces you and your family relax in, such as bedrooms, reading nooks, and even your living room.
Evoking Emotion While Infusing Impact & Energy
If your goal is creating impact and energy in a space, using saturated colors you love and their complementary colors is key. Whether you choose a warm- or cool-toned paint for your home, there are unlimited ways to add color to evoke the emotion and vibe you are going for. One of my favorites is adding bright green plants and stunning flowers.
Do you love gold accents? Consider adding them to your kitchen to spice up your space. Also be aware that your home office or entertaining areas are perfect places for color and fun elements. If dark and moodier is more your style, add more blacks and striking accents—or maybe bright and fresh would be perfect for your dining room so you choose a bright floral wallpaper! Your options to evoke a particular emotion are endless.
Soothing a Space with Less Saturated, Subtle Shades
Looking for a happy medium between neutrals and saturated colors for spaces that soothe and relax like bedrooms and bathrooms? Pastels and cool colors are a great complement to neutrals—since you don’t have to forego color to create a calming sanctuary. Blue in all of its different shades is one of my favorite colors for bedrooms or bathrooms. A less saturated version of most colors will work great to create a serene space.
