Wondering if a design consultation is right for you?
Here are some common interior design consultation FAQs…
What can I expect from an interior design consultation?
Your consultation is 90 minutes to use however you want. To ensure we make the most of it, there’s a little pre-work beforehand. (More on that in the next Q.)
If your home is within 30 minutes* of our Palos Verdes studio, I’ll come to your home for an in-person consultation. If it’s outside that range, we can meet via Zoom.
Either way, we’ll spend 90 minutes together discussing your design dilemmas. The time is yours to ask any questions, share your ideas, and get an expert’s design advice to help you reach your goals. Depending on your unique needs, I might draw up a quick sketch, share product ideas, or my favorite spots to shop. I love sharing design intel in these consultations — so ask away!
If you live more than 30 minutes from our studio but would prefer an in-person consultation, there may be travel fees involved. Connect here for a custom travel quote based on your location.*
How do I prepare for my interior design consultation?
Before your design consultation, we’ll send a Welcome Guide your way to gather a few key details.
First, a brief design consultation wish list
In just a few questions, we’ll hone in on your goals and priorities, your budget, and your style. This way, we can tailor our design advice to you and ensure the best possible experience.
Next, we want to hear your ideas
Have some inspiration images you love? We want to see them! We also want a couple images of your current space to help us start the brainstorming process before your consultation begins. To share these, simply drop them in a single doc at least a day before your consultation — that’s it!
Finally, we need some rough measurements of your space.
Because size and scale are so important, we ask for your room dimensions ahead of time. So grab a tape measure and a piece of paper and send the basic dimensions our way!
All in all, this shouldn’t take much of your time, but helps ensure we make the most of our 90 minutes together.
So, what can you cover in a design consultation?
Here are some real-life questions we’ve been asked that would be perfect for a 90-minute design consultation…
“I have some chairs that I want to recover — can you take a look and make sure I’m on the right track?”
We LOVE repurposing vintage pieces. They’re often of better quality and construction than many of today’s options. They also typically have sentimental value.
Which makes trying to tackle them on your own all the more overwhelming.
In a design consultation, we’ll talk fabric — not just color and pattern, but weave, durability, and more — to ensure it looks fantastic and is the right fit for your lifestyle. We can also talk foam and fill options, as well as finishes for legs or wood details. Lastly, I’m happy to guide you in selecting a reputable upholstery expert to ensure your pieces are in great hands. Altogether, you’ll walk away with every decision made so you can give new life into pieces you’ll love for decades.
“I think I want to get a new sofa but I'm not sure of the size or style - can you come over and let me know what you think?”
A sofa isn’t simply a piece of furniture — it anchors and influences the whole room. And since a quality sofa can cost thousands, it pays to ensure you’re selecting the right one.
In your design consultation, we’ll determine the right size and scale for your space. Have kids or pets? I’ll make sure we choose a fabric that can stand up to the realities of daily life. We can also select the right pillows for the perfect lived-in, layered feel.
No need to spend your Saturdays wandering showrooms — I’ll send exact recommendations your way so you can purchase with confidence, knowing every detail is designer-approved.
“What do you think I should do for window treatments? Should I get new panels/remove the shutters/install woven shades? I’d love to know what you’d suggest for my specific room.”
One-size-fits-all advice is rarely the best advice — especially with something as functional as window treatments. You don’t just want them to look great — you might also need them for light control, privacy, or both.
I’ll visit your space to help you pick the right window treatments for both your home’s architecture and your individual style. We’ll weigh the pros and cons of each option, go over textiles and materials, and where to purchase quality window treatments that fit your budget. Rather than relying on sales staff, you’ll have a design pro in your corner to give you objective advice and get your questions answered.
Other design topics that are great for a design consultation include:
Paint color selection
Architectural upgrades (e.g. you’re thinking about adding built-ins, wanting to change the look of a fireplace, or adding millwork and want to bounce ideas off of a design pro before hiring trades)
Furniture layout and traffic flow
Getting a second set of eyes on your remodel plans to ensure you’re not overlooking key details or making costly mistakes
Art, lighting, and styling — if you’re feeling stuck with those finishing touches, a designer’s eye can be a huge help!
Making a new house feel like home
Just want ideas! If you know a room doesn’t feel right, but you’re not sure why, a design consultation is the perfect way to get some expert advice for your space.
Essentially, an interior design consultation is YOUR customized time to get all the expert tips and intel you need. In the end, you’ll walk away with a clear vision and the confidence to make the next right steps.
Hate shopping for furniture and just wish someone with a good design eye could pick it out for you?
You’ll love this design consultation perk.
After your design consultation, we’ll send a Customized Studio Shopping List your way, highlighting our recommendations for any pieces we discussed in your consultation.
If you choose to purchase any of these through us, we’ll manage your order and provide status updates until delivery — taking the entire process off your plate altogether for a 15% procurement fee. Of course, you aren’t required to purchase through us and are more than welcome to use our suggestions as guidelines when sourcing pieces on your own.
Have another design topic or question not listed here? Reach out!
We’ll give you our honest feedback on whether an interior design consultation is right for you.
Cheers!
